Depew Redo

About

Sarah Gamble is the brains behind this operation. Sarah is an architect with a passion for community-focused design and has an love for all things old. She finds great pleasure in unique pieces and places that represent a part of the past. So, its no surprise that when looking for a residence of her own, Sarah wanted to find a place with character and history that she could restore and bring back to life. She bought the Depew House, a home built in 1925 and nestled in the historic Hyde Park development in Central Austin. The property, now located in the North Loop Neighborhood, marked the northeast corner of the Austin City Limits in 1935. With an (somewhat overly) ambitious vision, Sarah plans to restore, transform, and upgrade for its 85th birthday throughout 2010. Who/what inspires Sarah? NPR, especially Prairie Home Companion and This American Life. Her day job at the Austin Community Design and Development Center. Urban living. Mid-century modern furniture. Learning everyday.  Sharing life with friends and family spread around the U S of A.

Liz Canby is an artist, art history degree holder (and an official member of the Blanton!), a 5th grade teacher and Extrovert Extraordinaire! Liz brings her background in art and bubbly personality to help whip the Depew House into shape and keep us chuckling (with her, not at her… well, most of the time at least!) along the way. Turquoise seems to find its way into the walls, clothing items and cookware in Liz’s life, so we anticipate the color making its way into the restoration process. Who/What inspires Liz? Butterflies, water, and art deco designs. When it comes to people, I  gets lots of ideas from friends and family members. My BF Beth and Memaw constantly teach and empower me to learn about gardening and all other sorts of projects.

Sara Vahle is a traveler, designer and teacher. She also maintains an unhealthy addiction to sugar. “Hummingbird-like” may have been used to describe her insatiable appetite for anything sugary-sweet (speaking of, has anyone tried the sour gummy cherry coke bottles from Central Market?). Regardless of the possible lack of teeth in her later years, she presses on, and pursues her work in graphic design, and dabbles in hobbies of card making, screen printing, watercolor and pencil drawing. Sara also enjoys riding her 1980′s road bike around Austin, the Happy Hour at Blue Star, playing Saturday morning volleyball at Pease Park and tutoring/mentoring international kids as they transition to a new life in the States. Who/what inspires Sara? My dad. Smartest guy I know, hardest worker there is, and a creative visionary. Best of all, he still boldly wears white socks with Birkenstocks.

You girls are like a movie! Glamorous, smart, and about to embark on an epic journey of renovation and personal discovery. If “Depew Redo” were a movie, it would be the kind you go see at the Alamo Drafthouse, twice. And you order wine.
